Description
An excellent First Edition, French, Traditional, Rustic or Eclectic Style, vintage full color print after oil painting "The Hurdy-Gurdy Players" by Honoré Daumier. Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 4. Excellent condition - never framed.
Overall 9.2" W x 11.75" H
Image 8.2" W x 10.7" H
Daumier's responses to certain street scenes, while emotional, are never mawkish. Is it that he is mindful of imparting to his drawing that elegant distinction from which he never lapses, or that, when handling themes of obvious pathos, he tempers his compassion with a sense of human dignity? Probably the rare refinement of Daumier's calligraphy owes something to both of these precautions. In this composition the atmosphere is tragic more than anecdotal, with an epic grandeur worthy of the great artist whose ideal hero was Don Quixote.
