FLAVIO GARCIANDÍA (B. 1954) El Gallo mixed media and cardboard cutouts 95 x 130 in (241.3 x 330.2 cm) (installation dimensions; dimensions variable) Executed in 1983 Footnotes: This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist and dated September 6, 2025. Provenance Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner. El gallo (1983) is a key installation from Flavio Garciandía's early production, in which the artist investigates form, repetition, and spatial structure through a conceptual and experimental approach. Composed of sixty cut cardboard elements-rooster heads, feathers, and legs-the work is conceived as a flexible system whose final configuration responds to the specific conditions of the exhibition space. The elements are arranged in situ according to multiple possible layouts-dispersed, clustered, spiral, or sequential-producing varied visual and conceptual readings. The installation proposes an open system in which order and chaos coexist, and where form is intentionally irregular, fragmented, and mutable. The term 'bad forms' signals a deliberate rupture with traditional harmony rather than an aesthetic judgment. Through repetition and variation, Garciandía questions the stability of artistic form and emphasizes process, spatial context, and environmental interaction as integral components of the work. Formas malas anticipates concerns that would define his later practice, including irony, critical reflection on visual systems, and the interrogation of aesthetic conventions.
