Description: This striking set of four miniature watercolors by Jack Grunwell features some of Bristol’s most prominent historical and cultural buildings, highlighting the city’s rich architectural past and civic identity. Bristol Lord Mayor’s Chapel – Also known as St Mark’s, this is the only remaining chapel on England’s city streets to be owned and used by a city corporation. Built in the 13th century, it is renowned for its medieval stained glass and perpendicular Gothic facade. Theatre Royal, Bristol (1766) – Considered the oldest continually operating theatre in the English-speaking world, the Theatre Royal on King Street has been entertaining Bristol audiences since the Georgian era. Grunwell captures it bustling with horse-drawn carriages and figures in period dress. Shakespeare Tavern, Prince Street – Once a 17th-century timber-framed inn and later a bustling tavern for dockworkers and theatre-goers. This piece features the recognisable pub sign and its striking overhanging upper floors. Coopers’ Hall and Theatre Royal, 1740 – Located adjacent to the Theatre Royal, Coopers’ Hall was originally a guildhall for the Coopers' trade. Today it forms the grand front of the Bristol Old Vic. Grunwell’s rendering highlights the Georgian symmetry of the hall and its integration with the theatre complex. These works are a rare tribute to Bristol’s theatrical and civic legacy. Each piece is rich in historical detail, characterful brushwork, and architectural precision. Perfect for collectors with an interest in British theatres, Bristol architecture, or historic cityscapes.
