Description
1960S REDWOOD LIVE EDGE COFFEE TABLE; MANNER OF NAKASHIMA American; Circa 1960s Redwood slab; lacquered surface; charred (shou sugi ban-style) edges and base A mid-century organic modern coffee table crafted from a dramatic redwood slab. The top surface is lacquered to a warm; rich sheen while the natural bark edges and stump base have been charred to a deep black in a technique reminiscent of the Japanese shou sugi ban tradition; creating a striking visual contrast between the glowing red-amber interior and the darkened organic perimeter. At 73 inches long; this is a substantial and commanding piece with strong sculptural presence. The organic; free-form silhouette and celebration of natural wood character place this work firmly in the tradition of George Nakashima and the American Craft movement.
