Description
The workmanship showcases a refined combination of raised carving and openwork, a technique known as niku-bori sukashi. The tsuba has a naturally aged surface with a deep, attractive patina, and its boldly carved waves create a strong visual impact. The presence of copper sekigane indicates this was a functional piece, traditionally mounted for actual use on a sword.
The Insh? Suruga makers were a lineage who followed the Ikeda clan through several provinces, including Suruga, Mikawa, and Bizen, before settling in Inaba Province. Their style is known for its sophisticated execution and shows affinities with the Bush? It?, Ch?sh?, and Geish? schools, while being more refined than archaic Bizen Suruga works. This piece, with its lively and well-balanced arrangement, is a fine example of their art.
