Description
An OUTSTANDING late 18th century panoramic view of an historic battlefield.
It looks like the troops are regrouping after the battle
Wounded soldiers and horses are depicted in the foreground
A smoke from the fire still lingers in the dramatic sky
It is clearly signed and dated lower left, D. Langendyk 1793, with some more words, possibly a place, which are hard to decipher
The year 1793 saw the Old Continent in turmoil. The French Revolutionary Wars re-escalated with new campaigns and the Jacobite Reign of Terror in Paris spiraled to new highs. Portugal and Spain entered the First Coalition days after the execution of King Luis XVI in January. On 1st of February France declared War on Great Britain and Netherlands. Which of the subsequent battles is rendered in this particular work is subject to additional research
This museum quality masterpiece is well presented in its original giltwood period frame, with layered painted French matting, under glass
