Marcus Waterman (USA, 1834-1914) was an American painter, mainly of landscapes and Orientalist subjects. Born in Providence, Road Island, he graduated from Brown University and then moved to New York, where he kept a studio in New York University building for 20 years. Waterman himself, claims that he either worked with or was influenced by Thomas Hill and William Morris Hunt. In 1874, Waterman accompanied a group of painters including Hunt on a sketching trip along the Massachusetts coast and as a result soon resettled in Boston. He also spent much time traveling in the 1870's, 1880's and 1890's; among his destinations were the Netherlands, France, southern Spain, and North Africa.
