Description
Here's a lovely oil on board portrait of a Cantonese woman in traditional costume. The artist was Alice Barber Alderman (1874-1920). She was from an influential family in Portland, Oregon. This painting was done in the late 1800s and the subject may have been a member of the household staff or a familiar acquaintance as during this time period, there was a sizeable population of Cantonese immigrants in Portland. It has the qualities of an Impressionist style painting. Artist initials bottom left corner. Beaded edge mahogany frame is original to the piece and the directions for the framing are penciled on back of painting (See last photo). The wood back contains the names of artist's husband and children. It came from the estate of the artist's daughter, who had relocated to Gouvenor in St. Lawrence County, Upstate New York. For the collector.
