Description
An original prototype after the artist Frank Stella (1934-1924) of his masterpiece Lac Laronge IV. Acrylic polymer on raw canvas, 1969, from the Saskatchewan Series. This prototype was created for the San Francisco de Young/Legion of Honor Frank Stella Retrospective, November 5, 2016"“February 26, 2017, exhibition but was never used by the institution. Framed in a beautiful white floater frame with plexiglass. Unsigned.
Dimensions: Frame 22.5" wide x 28" high (inches)
Art 18" wide x 24" high (inches)
Stella's Protractor Series prints sell for $15,000-25,000. This rare original reproduction, acrylic on woven paper, is vibrant in color and nicely framed. An excellent homage to the master and difficult to discern from an authentic Stella to the untrained eye.
About Frank Stella: One of the most highly regarded American painters of the post-war era, Stella constantly evolved his style. The controlled minimalism of his works in the late 1950s and early '60s gave way to maximalist riots of color later in his career — with subsequent works surpassing the 2D canvas to become sculptural. His approach to materials was just as revolutionary, comprising house and car paint, cast aluminum, fiberglass and the latest 3D-printing techniques.
About Saskatchewan Series: In the summer of 1967, abstract painter Frank Stella taught a workshop at the University of Saskatchewan. His time there inspired a series of paintings named for places in the Canadian province, including Lac La Ronge, a scenic lake. Stella had already been working on a series of paintings on shaped (non"“rectangula) canvases with designs based on patterns made with protractors. The Saskatchewan series continued to explore some of the same patterns—specifically the circle and a four-petaled motif—but within a rectangle or square.
