We proudly present for your consideration a 19th century continental school port scene painting. Oil on canvas, signed illegibly at lower right. Set in what appears to be an original wood frame. The work depicts an everyday scene in what could be a Dutch harbor. We are estimating this to be a mid-19th century work, perhaps earlier due to the condition of frame, stretcher, and painting as well the butt-joint construction of the stretcher. The frame dimensions are 27 3/8" x 19 1/8" x 1 3/4". The stretcher is 22 7/8 " x 14 5/8".

There is an old sales sticker on the backside that may by Meier & Frank out of Portland, Oregon. Nevertheless, we believe this work to be European.

This is an antique painting with signs of age that would be expected. There is craquelure throughout, a few small areas of paint loss, and a 1 1/2" tear in the canvas. The painting also has a typical yellowing of the varnish that comes with age. The painting is otherwise in a stable condition. The frame, which appears to be original, is in good condition with wear consistent with age. Please examine all photos closely.
