Description
The Cesca cantilevered, cane chair is iconic in furniture design. This nearly 100-year old design is considered one of the top ten most important designs of the 20th Century. This design features black painted arms and seat edge. Its clean simplicity feels timeless and will go with many styles. A label on the bottom of the base says "made in Italy 61" and another label partially worn off says "made in Italy 55."
Unlike the numerous imitations out there these are the real thing, hand caned rather than machine, no caps to the tubular frame and the correct curviture and seat length.
"Thonet produced the chair until World War II. In the 50's Dino Gavina, a furniture manufacturer in Foligno, Italy, started making the chair with Breuer's permission. The name also changed, its namesake is Breuer's daughter Francesca, or Cesca. It was Dino who named the chair after her. In 1968 Knoll bought Gavina." Elaine Louie
The first chairs were designed by Marcel Breuer in 1927 and produced in Poland by Thonet from 1928 until World War II in the 1930's. The chair was later manufactured in large numbers by Gavina, Knoll, and many more. You may find a complete history on the Knoll website, who still manufactures them.
