
Description
Oil on canvas by Scott Leighton(Massachusetts 1847-1898). An equestrian scene signed in the lower right and dated 1891. During the time this was painted Leighton had a studio in Boston. He was an animal painter, mainly horses, of considerable fame. In the 1880's Currier and Ives reproduced 30 of his works as lithographs. Leighton was interested in horses at an early age and began raising and trading horses in his teens. In Portland he studied under Harrison Bird Brown. He exhibited widely including the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the National Academy of Design. Numerous institutions house his works including the Phoenix Art Museum, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Addison Gallery of American Art. He is listed in all major art references. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The contemporary frame has minor flaws. Measurements are 7" x 9"unframed, 16" x 18"framed.
