Description
Lightweight wood headrest with intricate interlocking knot motif engraved along underside of curved pillow and atop circular base with tapered sides. Carved with subtle fine details, such as line along lenth of central pillar support, and small rod-shaped brackets at base and top of pillar. Rich dark brown burnished patina. Small shard lost on side of base, two shards lost on sides of pillow. The headrests also function as symbols of vigilance. Young men charged with the care of their family's herds travel with them in their search for suitable grazing. Headrests with such small bases will soon tip, and the herders will unceremoniously be reminded of their reponsibilities. ... The inscribed interlace patterns reflect the influence of Islamic graphic design in the region. - Africa: The Art of a Continent, fig 2.9b, p. 128-129. 7"H. (18cm).
