Walter Lippmann (1889–1974) was one of the most influential American journalists, political commentators, and public intellectuals of the 20th century. A founding editor of The New Republic and a long-time columnist for major newspapers, Lippmann shaped modern political journalism through his analysis of democracy, public opinion, and the role of the press. His writings, including “Public Opinion” and “The Phantom Public,” remain foundational texts in media and political theory, and he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize twice for his commentary.
