Matthew Ridgway (1895–1993) was a senior United States Army officer who played a pivotal role in World War II and the Korean War. He commanded the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II, leading airborne operations in Sicily, Italy, and Normandy. During the Korean War, Ridgway revitalized United Nations forces as commander of the Eighth Army and later served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe. He went on to serve as U.S. Army Chief of Staff and remains widely respected for his leadership and reform-minded approach.
