Joe Foss signed Canadian First Day Cover issued November 10, 1989, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Canada’s entry into the Second World War. The cover features period imagery highlighting early Allied mobilization and training efforts, paired with a World War II–themed Canadian stamp and Ottawa, Ontario day-of-issue cancellation. Foss’s inscription and signature appear prominently at center, including his Marine Corps squadron designation.

Joe Foss (1915–2003) was a United States Marine Corps fighter pilot and one of the top American aces of World War II. Flying with VMF-121 in the Pacific, Foss was credited with 26 aerial victories, tying Eddie Rickenbacker’s World War I record. For his extraordinary combat leadership and skill, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1943. After the war, Foss remained active in public life as a broadcaster, conservation advocate, and Commissioner of the American Football League.
