Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk (1921–2014) served as navigator aboard the Enola Gay during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, one of the most consequential missions of World War II. As a key member of the aircraft’s crew, he played a critical role in navigation and timing for the mission. After the war, Van Kirk remained a thoughtful and reflective voice on the historical and ethical legacy of the atomic bomb.
