Harold Urey, Nobel Prize–winning chemist, signed commemorative First Day of Issue cover honoring the 100th Anniversary of Thomas A. Edison (1847–1947), issued February 11, 1947. The cacheted cover features a portrait of Edison and references his invention of the first incandescent electric lamp, paired with a block of four 3¢ Thomas A. Edison U.S. postage stamps. Postmarked Milan, Ohio, at 9:00 AM on the first day of issue, the cover is autographed by Harold Urey.

Harold Urey (1893–1981) was an American physical chemist best known for discovering deuterium, a heavy isotope of hydrogen, for which he received the 1934 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His work had wide-ranging applications in chemistry, physics, and planetary science. During World War II, Urey contributed to the Manhattan Project and later became a leading figure in research on the origin of life and the early solar system.
