Paul Tibbets (1915–2007) was a career U.S. Army Air Forces officer best known as the pilot and mission commander of the B-29 Enola Gay. On August 6, 1945, he flew the aircraft that dropped the first atomic bomb used in warfare on Hiroshima, Japan. Tibbets commanded the 509th Composite Group, the highly secret unit responsible for atomic strike operations during World War II. He later retired as a brigadier general and remained a central historical figure in discussions of the atomic age and the conclusion of the war.
