Richard Nelson autographed First Day of Issue Canadian cover commemorating World War II (1939–1945), issued November 10, 1989. The cover features Canadian wartime imagery and postage honoring the establishment of the Allied convoy system, postmarked Ottawa, Ontario, on the official day of issue. Nelson has added a handwritten inscription identifying his role as radar operator aboard the B-29 Enola Gay.

Richard Nelson served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II as a radar operator assigned to the B-29 Enola Gay. As part of the aircraft’s crew, he participated in the Hiroshima atomic mission on August 6, 1945, one of the most historically significant operations of the war. Radar operators played a critical role in navigation, situational awareness, and mission execution during long-range B-29 flights.
