Curtis LeMay (1906–1990) was a career U.S. Army Air Forces and later U.S. Air Force officer who played a major role in American strategic bombing doctrine during and after World War II. During the war, he commanded bomber groups in both the European and Pacific Theaters, including the XXI Bomber Command, overseeing the B-29 firebombing campaign against Japan. LeMay later became the founding commander of the Strategic Air Command, transforming it into a central component of U.S. nuclear deterrence during the Cold War. He retired as a four-star general and remains one of the most influential—and controversial—figures in modern air power history.
