Lewis F. Powell Jr. (1907–1998) served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1972 to 1987. Appointed by President Richard Nixon, Powell was widely regarded as a centrist and frequent swing vote during a pivotal era of the Court. He played a key role in decisions involving affirmative action, abortion rights, and the balance between government authority and individual liberties. Powell’s pragmatic approach and influence made him one of the most consequential justices of the late 20th century.
