John Jay typed and signed letter, dated January 24, 1891, on personal letterhead from “The Lenox” in New York. Addressed to Rev. Samuel M. Jackson, the letter acknowledges Jay’s election as an active member of the American Society of Church History and includes his acceptance of the appointment, along with a mention of enclosed payment for the initiation fee and dues.

John Jay (1817–1894), the grandson of Founding Father and first Chief Justice of the United States John Jay, was a prominent American diplomat, lawyer, and abolitionist. He served as U.S. Minister to Austria-Hungary under President Ulysses S. Grant and was a leading advocate for civil service reform and religious freedom. Jay also held deep interest in ecclesiastical affairs and was active in historical and academic societies of the late 19th century, including the American Society of Church History.
