Also included is an original Washington, D.C.–postmarked envelope bearing a U.S. Senate Chamber imprint and addressed to President Garfield during his presidency.
Completing the grouping is a period facsimile-printed broadside reproducing Garfield’s moving August 1881 letter to his mother, written while he lay gravely wounded following the assassination attempt. The facsimile has period pencil notations on the verso.
Fine to near fine condition overall.
James A. Garfield (1831–1881) served as the 20th President of the United States for only six months before succumbing to complications from an assassin’s gunshot wound. His assassination and final correspondence remain among the most emotionally resonant episodes in American presidential history. This family-centered archive offers a rare and intimate connection to Garfield through his children, making it a compelling addition to any advanced presidential or 19th-century Americana collection.
