John Christen Johansen handwritten letter signed (ALS) and dated January 23, 1963, on All Mercy Park stationery. Addressed to “Miss Seesman,” Johansen reflects on the challenges and discipline of painting, noting that it is “pretty much a total strain on all one’s faculties” and far from the oft-heard idea that “painting is fun.” He emphasizes the toil, dedication, and effort required in the artistic process, calling it “hard work to which one must contribute all one’s strength powers.” An insightful and philosophical commentary on the nature of art from an accomplished portraitist.
