Chalmers “Slick” Goodlin (1923–2005) was an American test pilot best known for his work with the Bell X-1 program in the late 1940s. Before the Air Force assumed control of the X-1 flights, Goodlin was Bell Aircraft’s chief test pilot and flew the rocket plane to speeds approaching Mach 1, helping prove the aircraft’s design and capabilities. His work was critical in the transition from conventional flight to the supersonic era. Goodlin later continued a successful career in aviation and industry, remaining closely associated with the history of experimental flight.
