John H. Glenn Jr. (1921–2016) was a U.S. Marine Corps aviator, astronaut, and statesman who became the first American to orbit the Earth aboard Friendship 7 in 1962. Following his NASA career, Glenn served as a U.S. Senator from Ohio for over two decades. In 1998, at age 77, he made history once again as the oldest person to fly in space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, marking a remarkable bookend to his legacy of exploration and service.
