Jerrie Cobb (1931–2019) was an accomplished American aviator and one of the members of the Mercury 13, the group of women who privately underwent the same astronaut testing as NASA’s original Mercury astronauts. A record-setting pilot, Cobb held numerous world records in speed, distance, and altitude and became the first woman to fly many advanced aircraft types. Though she was never allowed to fly in space, her role in challenging gender barriers in aviation and spaceflight made her a lasting symbol of perseverance and progress in American aerospace history.
