Chuck Yeager & Walter C. Williams dual-autographed aviation commemorative cover celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Bell X-1A’s first powered flight, postmarked February 21, 1978, Edwards Air Force Base, California. Brigadier General Chuck Yeager, legendary test pilot and first person to break the sound barrier, inscribed: “I chased Skip on this flt in an F-86D – Charles E. Yeager, Brig Gen USAF Ret.” Walter C. Williams, Chief of the NACA High-Speed Flight Station, has also signed boldly at right. The Bell X-1A program represented a major milestone in supersonic research, and this cover connects two of the most important figures in America’s high-speed flight history.

Chuck Yeager (1923–2020): Brigadier General Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager was a United States Air Force pilot, test pilot, and World War II ace, best known for becoming the first human to fly faster than sound on October 14, 1947, in the Bell X-1 “Glamorous Glennis.” His achievements revolutionized aeronautics and inspired generations of aviators.
Walter C. Williams (1919–1995): Walter C. Williams was a NASA engineer and test operations director, serving as Chief of the NACA High-Speed Flight Station at Edwards AFB. He supervised many of the early X-plane programs, including the Bell X-1 flights, and was instrumental in establishing the testing protocols that paved the way for modern aerospace research.
