The cover features the 5¢ Doctors Mayo commemorative stamp and an ArtCraft cachet marking the centennial year of the Mayo Foundation. Pauling’s signature appears prominently in ink across the upper portion of the cover.

Linus Pauling (1901–1994) was an American chemist, biochemist, and peace activist, and the only person to receive two unshared Nobel Prizes. He won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 for his research into chemical bonding and molecular structure, and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962 for his advocacy against nuclear weapons. Pauling’s scientific work transformed modern chemistry and molecular biology. His influence extended beyond science into public health and global peace efforts.
