James Monroe autographed vellum land grant document, a desirable military land grant by which President Monroe, “in pursuance of the Acts of Congress appropriating and granting Land to the late Army of the United States,” conveys federal bounty land as compensation for military service during the War of 1812. The document is dated January 1, 1819 and is executed and signed by Monroe as President of the United States, and countersigned by the Commissioner of the General Land Office. The original paper seal remains intact with its attached printed land-office label.
The land is granted to Archibald McNeil, identified within the document as a private in the Seventh Regiment of Infantry. The grant reflects the early federal policy of rewarding military service through the distribution of western lands. The reverse bears extensive period endorsements, conveyances, and later county and state recording notations, providing a clear and continuous chain of ownership.
Document measures approximately 13 × 9.5 inches. Light age wear, expected fold lines and toning.
James Monroe (1758–1831) served as the fifth President of the United States from 1817 to 1825 and is best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine, which shaped American foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere for generations. A veteran of the Revolutionary War, Monroe presided over the “Era of Good Feelings” and oversaw national expansion and postwar stabilization following the War of 1812.
