Details:
William Paterson autographed document (ADS), dated May 15, 1786, consisting of a handwritten receipt acknowledging payment of 20 pounds, 1 shilling, and 3 pence for the account of Peter D. [surname unclear], Esq., identified within the text as Collector of Somerset. The document is executed entirely in Paterson’s hand and signed by him, reflecting his direct involvement in financial and administrative matters during the post–Revolutionary War period.
The receipt measures approximately 4 x 5.25 inches and bears a contemporaneous docket on the verso noting that the payment pertains to rent.
Accompanied by a 20th-century printed book-page portrait of William Paterson.
Near fine condition.
William Paterson (1745–1806) was a Founding Father of the United States, a signer of the Constitution, and a leading architect of the New Jersey Plan at the Constitutional Convention of 1787. He later served as Governor of New Jersey and as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1793 until his death. Autographed documents by Paterson are scarce, and examples dating from the Confederation period—just one year before the Constitutional Convention—are particularly desirable, representing his role at the very threshold of the nation’s founding era.
