Details:
Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson autographed Civil War–dated handwritten military document, consisting of a one-page medical furlough petition dated December 30, 1862, with original endorsement and approval signed by Jackson on January 3, 1863. The document was submitted on behalf of Confederate soldier Private W. W. Floyd, 45th Georgia Volunteers, requesting a medical furlough due to prolonged illness.
The document originates as a medical certification written by Confederate Assistant Surgeon James G. Miner, diagnosing Floyd with “Dropsy” and general disability, rendering him unfit for duty for a minimum of sixty days. The reverse bears the highly significant command-level endorsements, including Thomas Stonewall Jackson, signing as “T. J. Jackson, Lt. Genl,” formally forwarding and approving the request while commanding the Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia.
Also endorsing the document is A. P. Hill, signing as “A. P. Hill, Maj. Genl,” in his capacity as division commander, along with additional approving signatures including Walter H. Taylor (“By order of Genl Lee”), Colonel Thomas J. Simmons, and Confederate Surgeon R. L. Roddy. Together, these endorsements trace the furlough request through the formal Confederate chain of command.
The endorsements are dated January 3, 1863, placing the document immediately after the Confederate victory at the Battle of Fredericksburg and during the height of Jackson’s operational authority. The document offers rare insight into Confederate medical administration and soldier welfare while bearing the authentic autograph of one of the most important battlefield commanders of the Civil War.
The paper shows expected age toning, scattered small holes, and show-through from writing on both sides, consistent with field use and wartime handling, but remains fully legible and structurally sound.
A scarce and historically significant Confederate military document combining Stonewall Jackson’s autograph, medical history, and operational context—an exceptional piece of Civil War Americana and a cornerstone item for advanced collectors of Confederate command material.
