Details:
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip signed royal Christmas and New Year’s card, issued in 1956 and opening to reveal a formal family photograph taken aboard the HMY Britannia. The image depicts Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip standing with their two young children, Princess Anne and Prince Charles, on the ship’s deck. Both the Queen and Prince Philip have signed beneath the photograph in fountain pen, with the Queen adding the date “1956” alongside her signature.
The card features a gilt-embossed crown on the front cover and measures approximately 13.75 × 9.75 inches when fully opened. The interior bears the printed seasonal greeting, “With best wishes for Christmas and the New Year,” opposite the signed photograph panel.
Fine condition, with light, irregular toning to the front cover and a small amount of scattered, light foxing to the interior, consistent with age. The photograph and signatures remain clean and well-preserved.
Queen Elizabeth II (1926–2022) served as monarch of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth realms from 1952 until her death, making her the longest-reigning British sovereign in history. Prince Philip (1921–2021), Duke of Edinburgh, was her husband and consort, known for his naval service and decades of public duty. Royal Christmas cards signed by both figures, particularly early examples featuring their young family aboard the Britannia, are among the most sought-after forms of mid-20th-century British royal memorabilia.
