Ray Gallagher autographed 8 x 10 inch World War II–era aerial reconnaissance photograph documenting damage to Nagasaki following the atomic bombing of August 9, 1945. The image is a large-format aerial survey print annotated with a typed damage-assessment legend identifying industrial, transportation, and infrastructure targets, and is signed by Gallagher in ink at upper left.

Ray Gallagher was a member of the United States Army Air Forces and part of the aircrew aboard the Enola Gay, the B-29 Superfortress that carried and deployed the first atomic bomb used in warfare over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Serving as a flight engineer, Gallagher played a critical technical role in the historic mission, responsible for monitoring and maintaining the aircraft’s complex mechanical systems during one of the most consequential flights of the twentieth century.
