Ray Gallagher, World War II veteran, autographed First Day of Issue Canadian cover commemorating World War II (1939–1945), issued November 10, 1989. The cover features Canadian wartime imagery and postage honoring the mobilization of Allied forces, postmarked Ottawa, Ontario, on the official day of issue. Gallagher has added a handwritten inscription identifying himself as a combat crew member on atomic bombing missions, dated August 6 and 9, 1945.

Ray Gallagher served as a flight engineer with the 509th Composite Group, the U.S. Army Air Forces unit responsible for conducting the atomic bomb missions over Japan in August 1945. Stationed at Wendover Field and later Tinian, Gallagher’s technical expertise supported the preparation and operation of the modified Silverplate B-29 aircraft that changed the course of history.
