Details:
Fred J. Olivi and Charles W. Sweeney autographed First Day Cover honoring President Harry S. Truman, postmarked May 8, 1973, in Independence, Missouri. Both men add detailed inscriptions referencing their historic mission aboard the B-29 Bockscar during the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. An evocative piece directly connecting the airmen who carried out the mission with the president who authorized it.
Fine condition.
Charles W. Sweeney (1919–2004) was the U.S. Air Force major general and pilot of the B-29 Bockscar, which dropped the “Fat Man” atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Fred J. Olivi (1922–2004) served as co-pilot on that same mission, later authoring Decision at Nagasaki to recount his experience and its historical significance.
