Fred Bock, World War II U.S. Army Air Forces officer, autographed 10 × 8 inch black-and-white photograph depicting the headquarters sign of the 509th Composite Group. The image shows the base signage identifying the elite unit responsible for the atomic missions, photographed on-site during the final months of the war. Bock has signed the photograph clearly above the sign in dark ink.

Fred Bock (1918–2000) was a U.S. Army Air Forces captain who served as radar officer aboard the B-29 Bockscar, the aircraft that carried out the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. Born in Pennsylvania, Bock was selected for assignment to the highly secretive 509th Composite Group due to his technical expertise and operational skill. During the Nagasaki mission, he was responsible for radar navigation and instrumentation, playing a critical role in guiding the aircraft to the target area under challenging weather conditions. After World War II, Bock remained active in preserving the historical record of the atomic missions through interviews, reunions, and public education.
