Fred Bock, World War II veteran, autographed First Day of Issue Canadian cover commemorating World War II (1939–1945), issued November 10, 1989. The cover features Canadian wartime imagery and postage honoring the Allied air training effort, postmarked Ottawa, Ontario, on the official day of issue. Bock has added a contemporaneous handwritten inscription noting his service with the 393rd Bomb Squadron (VH), 509th Composite Group, U.S. Army Air Forces.
Fine condition.
Frederick C. “Fred” Bock was a B-29 pilot in the 393rd Bomb Squadron, 509th Composite Group. The aircraft Bockscar—which dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki—was named for him (it was piloted on the mission by Charles W. Sweeney while Bock flew another aircraft). After the war, Bock worked as a research engineer.
