Details:
Bill Barney, radar operator aboard the Bockscar and member of Crew C-13 of the 393rd Bomb Squadron, 509th Composite Group, pair of autographed 5 x 7” satin-finish photographs. One depicts Barney beside the Bockscar, while the other shows the towering Nagasaki mushroom cloud, both boldly inscribed in blue ink with mission details: “Nagasaki Instrument Plane, Aug 9, 1945” and “Radar, Bockscar.”
Accompanied by a four-page provenance packet from 509th historian Robert Krauss, including a signed handwritten letter (2021) confirming authenticity and background on Barney’s role and aircraft assignment, a crew roster for C-13, Barney’s combat record sheet, and related reference material from The 509th Remembered archives. Krauss details that the scientific instrumentation plane The Great Artiste—flown by Barney’s crew—was switched with Bockscar for the Nagasaki mission, making Barney’s signed images a direct link to one of the war’s pivotal moments.
