Charles Albury autographed original 10 × 8 inch black-and-white aerial photograph depicting the atomic mushroom cloud rising over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The image was taken from the accompanying B-29 aircraft during the mission and shows the expanding cloud column piercing the cloud layer below. Albury has signed the photograph in the upper margin in dark ink, adding an inscription identifying his role and the date of the mission.

Charles Donald Albury (1920–2009) was a U.S. Army Air Forces staff sergeant who served as tail gunner aboard the B-29 Bockscar during the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Born in Miami, Florida, Albury enlisted during World War II and was assigned to the 509th Composite Group, the elite unit responsible for delivering atomic weapons. During the August 9, 1945 mission, he manned the rear defensive position, maintaining watch during the aircraft’s escape from the blast area. After the war, Albury remained active in veterans’ organizations and educational outreach, sharing firsthand accounts of the mission and its historical consequences until his death.
