Silas H. Stringham autographed handwritten letter (ALS), war-dated and written from Brooklyn, New York, dated December 18, 1861. In the brief but formal note, Stringham acknowledges and complies with the recipient’s request, and signing as Captain, U.S. Navy. The letter dates from the opening year of the Civil War, shortly after his pivotal role in Union naval operations.

Silas H. Stringham (1798–1876) was a career United States Navy officer whose service spanned the War of 1812 through the Civil War. Promoted to flag officer in 1861, he commanded the successful Union assault on Hatteras Inlet, North Carolina, securing the Navy’s first major victory of the conflict. Stringham later served in senior advisory roles and remains an important figure in early Union naval strategy.
