Franz Sigel (1824–1902) was a German-born revolutionary, Union Army major general, and one of the most prominent “Forty-Eighters” to serve in the American Civil War. A popular figure among German-American immigrants, Sigel played a key role in recruiting ethnic regiments for the Union cause. Though his battlefield record was mixed, his political influence and symbolic importance were substantial, and he remains a significant figure in Civil War history and immigrant military leadership.
