Ambrose E. Burnside autographed handwritten letter (ALS), written shortly after his promotion to Major General, thanking Tiffany & Co. for their handsome gift of new rank epaulets. In the letter, Burnside expresses his appreciation for the presentation of the shoulder straps and acknowledges the courtesy extended to him upon assuming his new rank.
The content offers a personal glimpse into the material culture of Civil War officer promotions, as well as the relationship between prominent military figures and elite American firms such as Tiffany & Co., which supplied presentation pieces and insignia to high-ranking officers during the war.

Ambrose E. Burnside (1824–1881) was a Union general during the American Civil War, best known for his command of the Army of the Potomac and his service at battles including Antietam and Fredericksburg. Burnside later served as Governor of Rhode Island and as a United States Senator, remaining a prominent public figure in postwar America.
