Description
Details:
United States Fractional Currency 25-cent note from the Series of 1874, issued during the post–Civil War period when small-denomination paper money was used to offset the shortage of circulating coinage. The obverse features a portrait vignette with bold denomination design, while the reverse displays the ornate green scrollwork typical of late-19th-century fractional issues.
The note shows moderate circulation wear, including heavy creasing, surface soiling, edge wear, and areas of paper loss and tape repair on verso.
Fractional currency was introduced by the U.S. Treasury during the Civil War to replace hoarded silver coins and remained in use through the 1870s. These notes played a vital role in daily transactions.
