Details:
The Morris Canal Banking Company five-dollar note, payable twelve months after date with interest, issued at Jersey City on May 25, 1841. This early American obsolete banknote features bold engraved vignettes, including an allegorical canal scene and classical figures, along with prominent “5” denominations throughout.
Printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, one of the premier 19th-century American security engraving firms, the note reflects the high artistic and technical standards of antebellum banknote production.
Exhibits light circulation wear consistent with age, including light overall toning, soft folds, edge wear, and areas of surface soiling.
The Morris Canal Banking Company was closely tied to the Morris Canal, a major early-19th-century infrastructure project that played a key role in the industrial and commercial development of New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic region.
