Original War of 1812–era battalion orders manuscript, containing five separate military orders written in period ink on both sides of a single sheet, relating to operations connected with Fort Constitution and the Eastern Battalion. The manuscript includes orders concerning transportation of arms and equipment, ordnance logistics, public funds, and battalion-level administration during the lead-up to and early years of the War of 1812.
Notably, the document includes two orders issued by a young John A. Dix, then serving in an early military administrative capacity, decades before his later prominence as U.S. Senator, Governor of New York, Secretary of the Treasury, and Union general during the Civil War. The remaining orders are issued by various battalion and departmental officers and reference Fort Constitution, Portland (District of Maine), Boston, and Charlestown, Massachusetts, illustrating the interconnected coastal defense and ordnance network of New England during this period.
The manuscript reflects the practical, day-to-day mechanics of early U.S. military organization, including supply movement, command authority, financial accountability, and troop deployment.
Document measures approximately 8 x 13 inches. Light age wear, expected fold lines, and toning.
John A. Dix (1798–1879) would go on to become one of the most influential American political and military figures of the 19th century, serving as U.S. Senator from New York, Governor of New York, Secretary of the Treasury, and a major general in the Union Army. His early military correspondence and orders from the War of 1812 era represent the formative stages of a consequential public career.
