Edward Everett autographed manuscript notice, measuring approximately 6 × 3.75 inches, issued in Cambridge and dated February 29, 1848. The printed-and-handwritten notice authorizes the senior class to hold a meeting in the “Societies’ room” at 6 o’clock in the evening for the purpose of choosing a theme bearer. The document is signed in full by Everett at the conclusion, reflecting his administrative role in Harvard academic life during the period.
This notice dates to Everett’s tenure as President of Harvard University and offers a rare glimpse into his involvement in the daily governance and ceremonial traditions of the institution. The combination of printed text and period manuscript annotation typifies mid-19th-century academic ephemera and underscores Everett’s hands-on leadership style.
Near fine condition, with expected age toning, light creasing, and minor edge wear.
Edward Everett (1794–1865) was one of the most prominent American statesmen, scholars, and orators of the 19th century. He served as a U.S. Congressman, Governor of Massachusetts, U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and Minister to Great Britain, and was President of Harvard University from 1846 to 1849. Everett is best remembered today as the principal orator at the Gettysburg dedication in 1863, where his two-hour address preceded Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
