The image captures Justice White standing alongside fellow members of the Court in an official interior setting. The photograph is signed in blue ink by White at the upper right.

Byron White (1917–2002) served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1962 to 1993. Appointed by President John F. Kennedy, he was known for his independent and pragmatic approach to constitutional interpretation. Before his judicial career, White was a standout athlete and Rhodes Scholar, later serving as Deputy Attorney General. His long tenure and centrist influence made him a key figure on the Court during a period of major social and legal change.
