Description
Atlas of London - Population 1961 - Number of persons born in India, Pakistan, Ceylon, British Africa and the British Caribbean, by enumeration districts'. This fascinating piece of social history shows the pattern of settlement in 1961 within London of migrants from the Commonwealth, with people of South Asian, Caribbean and African origin shown in different colours. The text notes that "Carribean immigrants, who form the largest group of 77,900 are well distributed throughout south London, but north of the river there are two areas of marked concentration: the North Kensington [Notting Hill] and Paddington district extending into Willesden, and the area in and around Stoke Newington". In explaining why Caribbean migrants clustered in these areas, we note that those who arrived on the Empire Windrush in 1948 "who had not already arranged accommodation were temporarily housed in the Clapham South deep shelter in south-west London, less than a mile away from the Coldharbour Lane Employment Exchange in Brixton, where some of the arrivals sought work", others settled in Notting Hill and North Kensington, which was also home to a struggling white working class, and where housing was more affordable. South Asian migrants were clustered in Stepney, and perhaps more surprisingly in South Kensington and Bayswater. At the time of writing the map is on display in the London Metropolitan Archive .
